Welcome

Welcome to my website where you can find out more about me and my role as a councillor. You can view these pages, or read my blog, to keep up to date with my involvement in local issues.

I am one of your County councillors for Willington.

I was born at Sunnybrow and have lived in the area all my life. I have been married to Alice for 47 years and have two children Julie and Andrew and two grown up grandchildren Rebecca and James.

I have been a community activist for many years and was once described in the local press as “the human embodiment of community spirit” - praise indeed.  I am a past Chairman of Willington Community Partnership and currently Company Secretary for Willington Community Action. I am a member of the Methodist Church and the GMB union.

In 1995 I was elected to Wear Valley District Council where I was the Chairman of Housing Services and in 2001 was elected to Durham County Council eventually becoming a member of the cabinet from 2003 – 2008 holding the portfolios for Waste Management, Planning and Trading Standards and Social Inclusion and Sport and Leisure.

I consider this to be an exciting period in local government and a great honour to be elected by my peers to this role.  In 2007, I was appointed as a magistrate on the North Durham Bench, a very worthwhile way of serving the public. A highlight of my life was being honoured by the Queen for services to the community by being awarded an MBE.

I consider myself an imaginative, versatile and self motivated person with a history of highly developed organisational skills, a good understanding of social policy and the ability to work at all levels. A problem solver, I am able to work constructively with a wide range of people. I feel that unity is strength and now the dust has settled from Local Government Reorganisation all members must work together and strive towards making County Durham a place that is economically viable, prides itself in its care of the older residents, has a reputation for its educational facilities and achievement, environmentally friendly with above average recycling rates and consults in a meaningful way with its residents.

As your councillor I'm very interested in hearing your views on the topics that are relevant to our community. There are a number of ways you can get in touch; I look forward to hearing from you...
