Half-Term Activities for all the Family!

Sunday 14 - Sunday 21 February 1.30-3.30pm
Family Drop-In Workshops for all ages, come and along and enjoy a vareity of art and craft activities from sculpture and painting to medal making and collage.
Pop in for 10 minutes or stay for the full 2 hours. (Under 8's must be accompanied by an adult).

Thursday 18 February - Military Handling Session, get hands on with our military collections.
Friday 19 February - Wartime Games and Past Times, try your hand a vareity of wartime games. Are they that different to the games we play today?

Sunday 21 February - Medal Madness, look round our medal gallery, and then create your own medals!
All materials supplied, suitable for all ages and no booking is necessary. These sessions are free! (normal building admission charge applies).

An assortment of Allied small arms from the battlefields of World War Two.
Medals
Saturday 6 February, 1.30-3.30pm
This session will look at the stories behind campaign medals, particularly WWI and WWII, as well as exploring the gallantry medals that have been awarded for bravery. If you have any medals at home, please bring them along and have them identified.

War Talks
The DLI Archive: Reflections from the inside and the outside

Since the transfer of the DLI Archive to the County Record Office, a huge amount of work has taken place on letters, maps, photographs, oral history and records of individual soldiers and various levels of units. This talk will reflect on the archivist's view of the collection.
A history of the military sniper, from the 19th - 21st century

How did the science of sniping originate and why has it become NATO's fastest growing specialism? Author Martin Pegler explores the snipers' world and will answer these, and many other questions about this most secret subject.
The Steel of the DLI

The 2nd Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry was one of only a few regular units that didn't have its history written after the Great War. With the publication of "The Steel of the DLI" last October, John Sheen has rectified this gap in the Regimental history. The talk will cover the service of the battalion in France from 1914 until the Armistice in 1918.
Annand VC and 2DLI France 1940

The 2nd Battalion The Durham Light Infantry arrived in France in September 1939 as its forebears had done in September 1914. The talk will cover the Battalion's action on the River Dyle, where Lieut. Richard Annand won the first Army VC of the Second World War, and the final action of the campaign at St. Venant.
Witness: Women War Artists

This talk explores the remarkable experiences and achievements of women war artists throughout the Twentieth Century. Women have commissioned through Official War Art schemes since the First World War. Many have also worked independantly, offering an official perspective.
With images from the Imperial War Museum's art collection and using the artists' own words.
