Building and Grounds

Set in superb open parkland just north of the centre of Durham City at Aykley Heads, few visitors to the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery today realise that they are visiting the site of the last colliery in Durham City.

This section will tell you something about the history of the building and its grounds; take you on a walk of discovery around the site; and keep you informed about the range of outdoor events that are held every summer, ranging from brass band concerts to an annual military vehicle rally, and not forgetting the ‘Sculpture in the Park’ exhibitions featuring work by nationally and internationally recognised artists.
