Re: Pte Maurice Burrell,1913 - 1939/40.My grandfather fought with the 9th Btn DLI after leaving the coal mines of Durham in 1939. Killed in action Arras/Lille area late 1939 to early 1940. He was born in Winlaton where the family has been as far back as the history of the village. My father who was only 9 years old when his father marched off down Blaydon Bank. He was the the eldest of 4 children.Often he told me stories of what the 9th did during the reargaurd cover (infantrymen taking on panzer units) and sacrifices made to assist the Expeditionary Forces' retreat to Dunkirk. These stories were narated to him by those who were fortunate enough to return home. If true, the evacuated units owed much to the 9th and those other units involved in rearguard actions, the course of the war may have been completely diferent. I never met either of my grandfathers as my mothers father was also killed in action during 1942. Is there anyone out there who remembers my grandfather or fought along side him who could tell me what happened to him, where it was and what kind of soldier he was? I would also wish to know which medals he was awarded as none were passed down, they were stolen from my father in the early 1950s. It would be my legacy to my father and grandfather to have them replaced. My father died 12 years ago and I am an ex soldier myself who left the Army 19 years ago. I have began contacting old comrades of my own and often wish that the technology available to us could have been around for previous generations. My e-mail is b.burrell40@hotmail.co.uk or tel: 01904 423937.
