Our Geographical Area
Durham Police Authority covers the area of County Durham and Darlington Borough, which spans from the Cumbrian boundary in the west, to the North Coast in the east.
The area is situated in the heart of the North East Region and is bordered to the north by Northumberland and Tyne and Wear and North Yorkshire and Tees Valley to the south.

To facilitate a more community focused policing service, the Constabulary has two police command areas:
North Area
The North Area covers Derwentside, Chester-le-Street, Durham City and Easington local authority areas.
South Area
The South Area covers Darlington, Sedgefield, Wear Valley and Teesdale local authority areas.

This structure, together with an upgraded communications system and digital radio technology for all frontline offices, has improved local responsiveness and resilience.
To develop closer links with communities, there are also community inspectors with specific geographic responsibilities who are supported by dedicated beat officer teams, and core response teams operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
