Scrutiny Committee for Building a Strong Economy

Membership

25 Non-Executive Members of the County Council and up to 6 non-voting Co-optees are members of the Scrutiny Committee for Building a Strong Economy.

Chairman’s Welcome

Durham County’s economy has been transformed. Whilst we can be proud of our industrial history and heritage, there are great opportunities to build upon and develop the new industries and services which have been established in our area in recent years, and to further promote tourism.

The vision of the County Durham Economic Strategy is "to secure the economic well-being of the County". We need to create high quality employment, generate wealth, develop an enterprise culture, strengthen and diversify the local economy and exploit the potential of new technologies such as IT, scientific research and other opportunities in the knowledge economy.

Our aim is to create a diverse business sector which can be resilient, responsive and adaptable to change. In this way, we can provide stimulating and fulfilling job opportunities to create a positive future for our young people and a prosperous county for all our residents.

We keep these principles in mind in the work of this Committee.
